Outgoing Scholarships for POLMAR PhD Students
Call for 2010/2011
The Helmholtz Graduate School for Polar and Marine Research (POLMAR) offers up to 10 short stays (between 1-3 months) abroad for POLMAR student members only, providing them with the possibility of undertaking part of their doctoral studies in a foreign country, and allowing them the benefit of working within an internationally recognised group of researchers in their specialised area of research. By advertising this outgoing scholarship, POLMAR aims to:
- Offer its members the possibility to undertake a PhD relevant scientific stay abroad of up to three months
- Assist in increasing the competence of POLMAR students through an international research experience
- Contribute to further develop scholarship holders´ knowledge and skills in their respective field of study
- Promote scientific and intercultural exchange
- Help building international linkages and networks
Target Group: POLMAR students who are -in priority- in their second or third of the PhD project. A POLMAR scholarship can be granted once within a PhD project.
Eligibility Criteria: Eligibility criteria are justified quality, feasibility and added value of the proposed scientific project. Applicants must provide proof (“minutes”) that they have regularly undertaken their half-yearly PhD committee meetings.
Amount and Tenure of Fellowships: Up to 10 outgoing scholarships will be provided for 2010 (extending into 2011). The scholarships will be granted for the duration of 1-3 months. The scholarship comprises the following expenditures:
- Travel expenses to and from the host institution
- Day rate according to the AWI rates for the respective host country (please consult the AWI Reisekostenabteilung)
- Accomodation
- Monthly allowance of 100 Euro to cover research cost, laboratory costs, bench fees…
- Visa expenses
Applicants also need a health insurance valid in the country of destination. We heavily recommend a personal accident insurance. These costs cannot be refunded.
Deadlines: There are two deadline dates to apply for the outgoing scholarship:
- First deadline date: April 30, 2010 for stays abroad that will already start in summer 2010 (maximum 5 scholarships)
- Second deadline date: September 1, 2010 for stays abroad that will start in autumn 2010 or winter 2010/2011 (minimum 5 scholarships, more scholarships possible depending on free capacities from the first deadline)
Applicants will be informed about the final decision 8 weeks after the respective deadline.

MARUM/GLOMAR Early Career Fellowships for Woman
MARUM and GLOMAR support women in their career planning. In order to smooth the transition from the PhD into the post-doc phase, MARUM and GLOMAR offer up to two fellowships for women per year. The fellowships are intended for scientists who plan to submit a proposal to a German, European or international funding agency

academics, das führende Stellenportal für Karrieren in Lehre und Forschung zeichnet seit 2007 jedes Jahr eine Person aus, die durch herausragendes Engagement, zukunftsweisende Ideen oder beispielhaftes Handeln die Lehre oder Forschung nachhaltig positiv beeinflusst hat.
Der academics-Nachwuchspreis wird an eine Einzelperson vergeben, die einer Hochschule oder einer hochschulnahen Forschungseinrichtung angehört. Die Ausschreibung richtet sich weltweit an Nachwuchswissenschaftler/innen aller Forschungsrichtungen bis zu einem Alter von 35 Jahren.
Klaus Tschira Preis für verständliche Wissenschaft
Der Klaus Tschira Preis für Wissenschaft wird jährlich einmal verliehen. Verliehen wird er an Nachwuchstalente der verständlichen Wissenschaft in den Fächern Biologie, Chemie, Informatik, Mathematik, Neurowissenschaften und Physik. Um sich für den Klaus Tschira Preis für Wissenschaft zu qualifizieren müssen Nachwuchswissenschaftler im Jahr zuvor promoviert worden sein oder aber sie müssen eine exzellente Dissertation in den Fächern abgegeben haben und die mündliche Prüfung vor Ablauf des Einsendeschlusses bestanden haben. Der Bewerberbeitrag muss auf jeden Fall in deutsch sein. Ob der Bewerber nun auch wirklich aus Deutschland kommt oder wo er wohnt ist nicht ausschlaggebend.
