Since 2010 the shipping company Briese Schiffahrts GmbH & Co. KG (Leer, Germany), together with the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW), grants the „BRIESE-award for Marine Science”. This annual award honors exceptional doctoral theses in marine science. The results of the submitted dissertations should have been achieved to a great extent by the use of research vessels, or should relate to the development of technologies and/or data acquisition at sea.

AWI-Doktorandenpreis 2016/AWI PhD Prize 2016
“Friends of the AWI” have again awarded a PhD Prize targeted at honouring special accomplishments of a PhD student. Besides pursuing his/her degree, it is taken into account how he/she actively supports or supported his/her working group and the AWI in general. This prize is worth 2.000 Euro. Beyond that, its winner will be nominated for the Helmholtz PhD Prize (research field “Earth & Environment”).
Honoured achievement: Outstanding accomplishments during the PhD studies (graduation October 2015 and later)
- Scientific achievement, publication record, invited talks
- Scientific involvement in the working group/section/research division
- Contributions towards the working environment (e.g. voluntary engagement, participation in the DokTeam or own projects, public outreach)
Documents to be submitted:
- CV incl. list of publications
- Personal letter of motivation or recommendation for the prize from supervisor, working group leader, head of section or head of division
Applications should be submitted by email to email@example.com. Heads of working groups and sections are invited to nominate suitable candidates as well. After the application deadline, Friends of the AWI’s executive board will select the prize’s winner. The prize will be presented at the AWI Christmas Party in December 2016.

The Körber Foundation offers the annual Deutscher Studienpreis. Graduates of all scientific disciplines in a year can apply. The deadline is always the 1st of March of the following year. Therefore all who graduate in 2016 with an excellent result (magna or summa cum laude), can apply until March 1, 2017 for the award.
For substantial and innovative dissertations of particular social importance the Körber Foundation awards three first prizes à 25,000 Euro and six second prizes of 5,000 Euro. There is no age limit. You have to submit a text of maximum 40,000 characters describing the central findings of your dissertation and their social significance in a exciting and understandable manner.
Dissertation and reviwes may be in German or English, the contest text and abstract, however, must be written in German language.
4000 € for excellent PhD theses (summa or magna cum laude) with a close connection to satellite remote sensing of the cryosphere, in particluar of the topics glaciers, ice sheets, shelf ice, sea ice and permafrost.
Eligibility: Young researchers who have completed their PhD in the last 2,5 years at the DLR or at Helmholtz Institutes ( -> AWI!) and universities that cooperate with the DLR.
